FAQs

Why are you offering a membership right now?

We will be in production in October 2025. We decided to launch our brand now and work with Canadian cat-lovin’, eco-conscious customers as we build the brand.

This membership will give you incredible purr-ks and the ability to shape a major Canadian eco-friendly cat litter brand. We’re looking for your input on what the packaging looks like. Are we saying meaningful things that resonate with you? But most importantly, what should our stickers and t-shirt sayings be? If you think we should be setting up pre-orders now, then we will gently lift our cats off our laps, and get pre-ordering set up, too.

Where is Prairie Clean Litter made?

Prairie Clean Litter will be produced in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, beginning this fall using flax straw purchased directly from Canadian farmers.

Why is Prairie Clean Litter sooooo good at odour control?

Flax straw has a naturally low pH level. Sciencey-talk for... naturally neutralizing and absorbing the ammonia created by cat pee. That's why cleaning out clumps or stirring isn't necessary: you want to let the flax straw naturally do its job and trap and neutralize the ammonia. Our flax straw pellets naturally absorb liquid waste and eliminate the common ammonia smell associated with cat pee.

What do you mean when you say Prairie Clean Litter is 100% Canadian Made?

We mean exactly that. Prairie Clean Litter is 100% made in Canada. We buy flax straw from Canadian flax farmers to turn a natural, unutilized material (flax straw) into the cleanest, most effective, lowest odour sustainable cat litter you’ve ever used.

Processed and pelletized in Saskatchewan, our litter supports Canadian farmers and keeps harmful ammonia smells out of your home and harmful dust from your cat’s little lungs and your big human lungs.

What makes Prairie Clean Litter a sustainable product?

Prairie Clean Litter is made from renewable flax straw, a natural byproduct of flax farming in the Canadian Prairies. It is 100% biodegradable, requires no high-heat drying or water to produce, and reduces GHG emissions by preventing in-field straw burning.

Flax straw is often burned after harvest, causing air pollution and generating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Farmers can’t till it back into the soil, they can’t seed through it the next year, and there’s virtually no other use for it. By using our pellets, you help reduce open field burning and lower GHG emissions. (Just 50 tonnes of burned flax straw equals a year's worth of emissions from driving a car.) So, every time you support Prairie Clean Litter through your purr-chasing power, it helps cut greenhouse gas emissions.

How do you make it dustless?

When we process the flax straw, we compress it into pellets. That process alone reduces dust. Then, to make sure there’s no dust, our bagging machine has a very powerful vacuum that sucks any remaining dust out of each bag. (Cool note: the dust is collected and will be re-used to make more pellets. No waste.)

Is Prairie Clean Litter good for kittens, too?

Prairie Clean Litter is actually very good for kittens. Kittens can become quite ill if they happen to eat clay litter, which does happen sometimes. Kittens show no interest in eating our pelletized litter, but if they did, the small flax fibre wouldn’t cause them any issues.

Does Prairie Clean Litter clump?

No. It doesn’t need to clump. It does the job without it, which means less litter-box-cleaning for you. Instead, Prairie Clean Litter utilizes natural absorption to trap liquid and ammonia at the bottom of the litter box.

How is Prairie Clean Litter different from other cat litters?

Our litter is all-natural, unscented, and made from renewable flax straw grown by Canadian farmers. Prairie Clean Litter is 3x more absorbent than traditional clay litter and locks in odours without the need for harsh chemicals or artificial scents.

Our litter is incredibly low-tracking, obsessively dust-free, and lasts an unbelievably long time.

How much will Prairie Clean Litter cost?

When we are in production, the cost of one 10lb bag will be $34.99 CAD including shipping, plus applicable taxes. And, you will be able to set up a subscription and adjust your delivery schedule as needed.

How long does a bag of Prairie Clean Litter last?

One 20lb bag of Prairie Clean Litter will last approximately two months for one cat.

How do I use Prairie Clean Litter?

Just pour in about 3 inches. And only scoop the poop.

Don’t stir the litter! That makes the straw unbind from the ammonia. Let the natural flax straw do its natural job of absorbing and trapping ammonia.

Top up as needed. When you start to smell the faintest bit of cat pee, it’s time to change it. You can just dump it straight into the garbage can. That helps it break down faster. If you live in the country, distribute it on a non-food-growing field.

Is Prairie Clean Litter sold in stores?

Prairie Clean Litter is currently only available for pre-order online. But if you love it like we love it, it will soon be in stores too!

If you're a store and you want to carry an incredible 100% Canadian product that's eco-friendly and so naturally effective it's astonishing, let's talk. Email us at info@prairiecleanlitter.ca.

How should I dispose of Prairie Clean Litter?

Prairie Clean Litter is compostable, but make sure to follow municipal guidelines in your area

Homes: You can put it in your city's compost bin if your city allows biodegradable cat litter. Check with you municipality for your area for what's allowed. You can also put it in your compost bin, but make sure to remove solid waste and only use it for ornamental plants after a long composting period. Cat feces may contain Toxoplasma gondii, which is a concern for human health.

If you only have a garbage bin: you can tip the cat box and pour the used litter right in, or put it in a biodegradable bag.

Apartments: biodegradable bags or municipal compost bins, check for guidelines in your area.

Acreages: you can compost it or spread it out on land not being used for food production and it will compost naturally. Use any compost for ornamental plants.

Will my cat switch to Prairie Clean Litter?

Start them right away as soon as you get your cat. Our research shows it’s a cat-human partnership. You know your cat. As the cat parent, you can help your cat switch. Some hints:

  • Mix a little bit of their old used litter in the box so the scent is familiar.
  • Some people gradually mix it with the old litter until it’s 100% Prairie Clean Litter and the cat has transitioned.
  • Or, do like our Chief Strategy Officer did, and do it all at once. Her cats switched over and won’t go back to clay.

Can Prairie Clean Litter be used for multi-cat households?

Yes, Prairie Clean Litter is a multi-great option for multi-cat households.
