What are the benefits of Prairie Clean Litter?

Up to 3x more absorbent than clay

Less cleaning, lasts longer, no cat pee smell, healthier for your cats and for you.

Up to 3.5x more absorbent than crystals

Get rid of that cat pee smell caused by ammonia; lasts longer, less cleaning, better health.

Low dust

We use a powerful, industrial strength dust extraction system to remove dust from five different points in our litter-making process. This makes our litter healthier for you and your cats.

Low tracking

Our testing shows our litter has exceptionally low tracking. That means less cleanup, nothing stuck in your socks, and a low chance of it in your cat’s paws and fur.

Unscented & all-natural

It feels good knowing that, doesn't it?

$1 from each bag sold online is donated to Canadian animal shelters through our Prairie Clean Partners Program

You're helping the cats that haven't been adopted yet.

Why is Prairie Clean Litter sooooo good at odour control?

Flax straw has a naturally low pH level. That means it naturally neutralizes and absorbs ammonia from cat pee. Our flax straw pellets naturally absorb liquid waste and eliminate the common ammonia smell associated with cat pee to make your home healthier.

How is Prairie Clean Litter different from other cat litters?

Our litter is the only cat litter made from processed Canadian flax straw shive. It is all-natural, unscented, and made from renewable flax straw grown by Canadian farmers. Prairie Clean Litter is up to 3x more absorbent than traditional clay litter, up to 3.5x more absorbent than crystals, and locks in odours without the need for harsh chemicals or artificial scents.

Our litter is incredibly low-tracking, obsessively dust-free, and lasts an unbelievably long time.

Is Prairie Clean Litter lightweight?

“Lightweight” can mean different things, depending on what you’re comparing it to. Our bags are 10lb (4.54kg). Common household objects that are about 10lbs include: a large bowling ball, a metal folding chair, a medium-sized bag of potatoes, large older car battery, or a heavy electric guitar in its case. A 1-gallon jug of milk is about 8 or 9 lbs.

More into the numbers: Prairie Clean Litter is lighter, easier to handle, pour, and carry than most traditional clumping clay litters. Traditional clumping clay litter typically has a bulk density of about 800 to 1000 kg per cubic metre, and non-clumping clay ranges from about 600 to 850 kg per cubic metre. Our flax pellets are approximately 550 to 650 kg per cubic metre, which makes them lighter than most clay-based litters.

Is Prairie Clean Litter suitable for cats with health conditions or sensitivities?

Our litter is made from natural flax with no additives, which many customers find works well for sensitive cats. That said, every cat is different. If your cat has specific health conditions, we recommend consulting your veterinarian and introducing any new litter gradually.

Do you have real world testing or shelter trial results?

Yes, our litter has been tested in real-use environments, including typical customers who have cats and our shelter partner, the Regina Humane Society. Feedback has shown strong performance in odour control, low dust, low tracking, and ease of cleaning.

What makes Prairie Clean Litter a sustainable product?

Made from renewable Candian flax straw

Prairie Clean Litter is made from renewable flax straw, a natural byproduct of flax farming in the Canadian Prairies. It is 100% biodegradable, requires no high-heat drying or water to produce, and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by preventing in-field straw burning.

Flax straw is often burned after harvest, causing air pollution and generating GHG emissions. Farmers can’t till it back into the soil, they can’t seed through it the next year because the straw in its unprocessed form is so tough, and there’s virtually no other use for it. By using Prairie Clean Litter, you help reduce open field burning and lower GHG emissions – just 50 tonnes of burned flax straw equals a year's worth of emissions from driving a car!

What do you mean when you say Prairie Clean Litter is 100% Canadian Made?

We mean exactly that. Prairie Clean Litter is 100% made in Canada. We buy flax straw from Canadian flax farmers to turn a natural, unutilized material (flax straw) into the cleanest, most effective, sustainable cat litter you’ve ever used.

Processed and pelletized in Saskatchewan, Canada, our litter supports Canadian farmers and keeps harmful ammonia smells out of your home and harmful dust from your cat’s little lungs and your big human lungs.
What are the ingredients of Prairie Clean Litter?

Prairie Clean Litter is made entirely from flax shive, prairie spirit, and love. There are no added scents, perfumes, or binding agents. It’s as though the earth is giving our cats and us exactly what we need.

Are there herbicides or pesticides left over in straw used to make the litter?

No, conventional flax straw growing in Canada typically only uses herbicides in the early stages of growing, by the time the straw is harvested and baled, there are no residues.

Prevents CO₂ emissions from flax straw burning

You're helping the earth. Flax straw is tough. Farmers usually burn it to get rid of it because it’s hard to till back into the soil and it’s hard to seed back into the following spring.

Supports Canadian farmers

You're helping our amazing Canadian flax farmers get two incomes from one crop.

What goes into every bag we make

Where is Prairie Clean Litter made?

Prairie Clean Litter is produced in our 34,000 sq. ft. facility in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada.

How do you make it so low-dust?

When we process the flax straw, we compress it into pellets. That process alone reduces dust. Then, to make sure there’s as little dust as possible, our facility has a very powerful industrial-strength dust extraction system that extracts dust at five points in our process, including the automated bagging machine.

Everything you need to know about how cats use our litter

Is Prairie Clean Litter good for kittens, too?

Prairie Clean Litter is great for kittens. Kittens can become quite ill if they happen to eat clay litter, which happens on occasion. Kittens show no interest in eating our pelletized litter, but if they did, the small flax fibre wouldn’t cause them any issues.

Will my cat switch to Prairie Clean Litter?

Starting cats off with Prairie Clean Litter is great, but switching over from a different litter works, too. Our research shows it’s a cat-human partnership. You know your cat. As the cat parent, you can help your cat switch. Some hints:

  • Mix a little bit of their old, used litter in the box so the scent is familiar.
  • Some people gradually mix it with the old litter until it’s 100% Prairie Clean Litter and the cat has transitioned.
  • Or, do as our Chief Strategy Officer did, and do it all at once. Her cats switched over and won’t go back to clay!

Can Prairie Clean Litter be used for multi-cat households?

Yes, Prairie Clean Litter is a great option for multi-cat households.

How does Prairie Clean Litter perform in large litter boxes or special setups?

Our litter works well in standard and large litter boxes because it’s so absorbent. Multi-box households – it's really up to you and your cats. In testing, it worked in the majority of cases, but it really comes down to you and your cats.

Compatibility with automatic litter boxes may vary and is in our future testing plans. Research your automatic/robotic litterbox first to see if it’s compatible and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. There are some automatic litter boxes that will take pellets, and they are listed as such. If you do end up testing it and want to email us how your test went with our product, as a Canadian company, we welcome the volunteer help! Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee they will work (right now) because we haven’t tested any current brands.
Does Prairie Clean Litter clump?

No, it doesn’t clump. It doesn’t need to. Our litter does the important job of trapping smell without clumping. Prairie Clean Litter utilizes natural absorption to trap liquid and ammonia at the bottom of the litter box.

With clumping litter, you’re continually throwing out so much litter! Not using clay removes the need for clumping. Prairie Clean Litter stays in your box, doing its job, allowing you to get the most out of it. Enjoy less litter-box-cleaning with our longer lasting litter.

How to get the most out of every bag

How do I use Prairie Clean Litter?

For kittens: pour in about 1-2 inches of pellets (2.5-5 cm).

For cats: pour in about 2-3 inches of pellets (5-7 cm).

Scoop out the solids. We’ve used scoopers with wider gaps, so the pellets fall in between and your litter lasts longer. Top up litter box as needed.

There are two camps on stirring the litter.

  1. Our PCE Chief Strategy Officer prefers not to stir, allowing the pellets to absorb moisture and keep the pee trapped.

  2. Some customers, if their cats like to pee in one spot, remove the concentrated areas and then stir the pellets around.

Do what works for you.

Top up as needed. When you start to smell the faintest bit of cat pee, it’s time to change it. You can just dump it straight into the garbage can. That helps it break down faster. If you live in the country, distribute it on a non-food-growing field.

Full details on how to use Prairie Clean Litter can be found here.
How long does a bag of Prairie Clean Litter last?

Typically, one 10lb bag of Prairie Clean Litter will last approximately one month for one cat. For some households, it lasts a little longer, and for others who might have cats who urinate more, a little less. The good news is that you can adjust the length of your subscription to what works for you. (PCE’s Chief Strategy Officer, has two rescue cats and is finding it’s lasting longer than four weeks in her household.)

How many bags of Prairie Clean Litter do I need?

  • 1 cat = 1 x 10lb bag every month
  • 2 cats = 2 x 10lb bags every month
  • 3 cats = 3 x 10lb bags every month

Is the litter flushable?

Flush at your own risk. We do not officially recommend flushing. While the material is natural, plumbing systems and local regulations vary. If you choose to flush, it is at your own discretion. One day we will do testing, but we haven’t yet.

How should I dispose of Prairie Clean Litter?

Prairie Clean Litter is compostable but always follow municipal guidelines in your area.

Homes: If your municipality allows biodegradable cat litter, you can place used litter in your city’s compost bin. Check your local guidelines to confirm what’s accepted. You can also compost it at home but remove solid waste and only use the finished compost on ornamental plants after a long composting period, not food producing gardens. Cat feces may contain Toxoplasma gondii, which can pose risks to human health.

If composting isn’t available, simply tip the litter box into your garbage bin or place the used litter in a biodegradable bag.

Apartments: If your building or city offers compost collection that accepts biodegradable cat litter, you can dispose of it there. Otherwise, place used litter in a biodegradable bag and dispose of it in your garbage. Be sure to check local compost guidelines to see what’s accepted.

Acreages: Used litter can be composted on-site or spread on land that isn’t used for food production, where it can naturally break down. Because the flax straw is processed into short strands, it biodegrades well. If composting, remove solid waste and only use the finished compost on ornamental plants after a long composting period.
